I first came across the curiosity that I have come to call Melontown in 2023, when camping outside the town of Green River, UT. I woke up in my car to find that I had parked next to a propane gas tank that had been painted to look like a watermelon, with a hand-lettered advertisement for Vetere Melons. The rest of that day I noticed melon paraphernalia popping ups all over town, in the restaurants, painted on the side of buildings. It always struck me as a little strange, this small town in the middle of the desert whose economy seemed to be built entirely by melon mongers. A year later, my car was packed full of my personal belongings as I drove west from Colorado out to my new home in California, but I couldn’t help but stop in Green River for an afternoon and see how the place had changed, and hopefully find some new curios to photograph. It’s now a year since that last trip, and I haven’t been able to stop dreaming about this unique little town that I lovingly call Melontown.
